To solve the issue pertaining to not understanding the traffic or railway rules experienced say dabawalas having 10 -15 yrs experience should train the new dabawalas for ease of operations

New Acquisition of Customers can be done trough word of mouth publicity.

1)To solve the issue is only of the possible ways to reduce the risk of defect is to use Six sigma to drive down the number of suppliers in turn reduces the risk.
Six sigma refers to quality improvement and business strategy.
2) no over- reliance on technology.
3) cost of delivery and operational cost should be low.
4)traffic jams, pedistrains, delays in trains and signlas they should not stop the functioning.
5) discipline is very important for success.

Sir, they already hava 2 extra people each group but in case of natural calamities like heavy rain , it won't be able to work out with those 2 people rather they could hire more people like another two,it would be helpful. In regular days when everything is fine they may ask those people to do other activities like they can expand their business by cooking the food and giving to the employees working in the organisation so that it would be helpful for the employees (customer) to get good food.

the management of the dabbawala can try to make advertisement of their service in the companies where only few dabba are been delivered by various ways that is having a poster outside the company or giving away a advertisement poster with the dabba that is been delivered by this the other colleagues of the person getting the dabba can be attracted

Problems & solutions:

1: Mumbai traffic?
Ans : they should be smart enough to tackle the traffic.

2: natural calamities?
They should be prepared n planned earlier only for the solution.

3: two extra dabbawallas in each group ?
Ans : they should used when 1 or the other is not able to work properly.

4: Less education and avoiding traffic and railway bridge rules ?
Ans : they should be thought it all in training only by seniors.

5 : customer request to outsource the food ?
Ans: they can't do it cause they have to get up early for work and problem to investing money as they get less salary

6: no promotion offers?
Ans: they should be given promotion accordingly to their abilities but not by how many years of experience.

7: internet n mobile backend service?
Ans: They should be thought some proper English n simple usage of internet n mobile for better work.

8: customized boxes?
Ans: customized or uncustomized all the boxes upper should be perfectly coded.

Nuclear Families are increasing but there are many nuclear Families who still consider dabbawalas and prefer home cooked food basically in the areas like kurla Mahim ,Vile Parle,Vasai etc

There are no promotional offers but trust and Time efficiency can beat this challenge

Dabawalas would not prefer Delhi as it circular and have different Time slots and availability of locals is missing

In the world of technology, the dabbawala is working without use of any technological advancement. May be using some of the technological tools they also can improve their working system which can reduce time as well as workload.

People working with them are not really educated ,most of them are semi-literate so they only read the code n identity where to deliver the dabba. May be they can improve that and educate those people by giving them enough knowledge.

Mumbai is the place where in one can face lot of difficulties in form of climate, rains , traffic etc in this situation dabbawalas can open up various branches which will be locating in such a place that it should cover the maximum customer which will help to reduce time and pressure.

Dabbawalas are very quickly as compare to the Mumbai traffic and they are too much experience about routes so they can find a way easily.bit adding here we can give proper training courses to dabbawalas about railways rules timings which boggy they have to hire ,platform information etc

Promotional offers
They can promote others brand like they can stick the small pamphlet to the dabba so each and every customer can see.

Soultions to the given problems-

1. More training programs to be provided to dabbawalas. (avoiding trafic)

2. Carry commercials and samples inside dabbas.

3. Paint dabbas with advertisements.

4. Product endorsements.

5. Dabbawala owned restaurants with food take-out outlet.

6. Tie up with the other caterers to serve variety of meals i.e. diet food, Chinese/continental food, food for fasting.

7. Opportunity on the expansion of services on the routes of Mumbai metro & BRTS Generating revenue by promotion of other brands.

8. Expanding networks in other cities
Booking of service through internet & SMS.

9. Should come with more numbers of promotional activities.

10. Delhi is the best option avalible for extension. Metro is widely spread across the Delhi and can be used as the medium for delivering the lunch boxes.

11. The expansion aspect leads them to collaborate or hier educated managers to manage new recruits of differnt culture.

karan Nilajkar said...

The dabba wala started because of the banking workers who will not carry their daba's due to time and the rushes in the train

The fast-food culture of the young generation making problem for them but they are only in supply chain they are not in production so mainly they have to give more focus on that rather than fast-food culture beacause it will not work for longer period of time.
And the 2 more extra people they kept on every group because if a person not well then that 2 person will take that person position and they will supply smoothly.
They can aquire new customers buy providing what customer want.
By providing the training they can make them aware of the rules of railways

1. Traffic in all cities is ever increasing and solution for quick and efficient collection and reaching the nearby station has to be worked out, Few suggestions like motourized transport fever collection points and increased man power may be of help.
2. Natural calamities are act of god and no one can stop them. a suitable plan for such calamities if any should include small hutments or store rooms nearby railway station may be of help.
3. Nuclear families, no cooking, is an increasing trend. The new customer aquisition is also related to this problem. being nuclear families both husband and wife are working and suitable food from community kitchens may be a solution. this will also be a promotional activity and can be exploited.
4. The dabbawalas can also tie up with the caterers to serve variety of meals such as diet food, chinese/continental, fasting food etc, for the customers where husband and wife both are working and are not able to cook food at the time of leaving the office.
5. Natural calamities and heavy rains in Mumbai made the dabbawalas to stop their service for a day or 2 until their mode of transport (local trains) were stopped. The Dabbawalas personally called their customers to inform about the stoppage of dabbas.
6. New customer aquistion can be made through word of mouth and diversity such as taste and preference of the customers.
7. It is said that mumbai dabbawalas are less educated but more dedicated. The dabbawalas management can provide them learning about the traffic rules and regulation.

CONCLUSION:
The dabbawalas show that with the right system, an organization doesn't need extra talent to achieve extra performance. Even with less technological advancements and resources the dabbawalas are doing a tremendous job of registering themselves as a six sigma system.

The people who have experience of 10-15 yrs can train new trainers, so it will be easy for thm to operate. It will be difficult for the new person to invest ten times of group salary. Thy have to understand the traffic rules to the specific area and give them the idea about train timing so that the chances of missing train we be less.even they can make their own vans and can provode food,so that they can save time and easy to operate and also it should cover maximum area.

1) Increasing Mumbai traffic: Traffic affects the dabbawalas because they need to reach in time or else they will miss the trains

* Mumbai traffic is huge so widening of roads may solve and they use railway station so crowd in railway station for every 3mins gets changed as every 3mins local train arrives at station.
* natural calamities can be tackled with precautions and safety measures.
* Instead of two extra dabbawalla per group they can reduce it to one, so that if anything happens that dabbawalla can help others.
* Conducting training program for dabbawallas to acknowledge them about traffic rules and railway bridge rules so that they can follow up with rules and there will not be any issues by traffic n railway authority. Even it will help them with fastening their service. It will be more helpful for them regarding their safety on road n stations.
* There are more nuclear family in Mumbai, more than problem this nuclear family will provide them more business as oftenly all in family will be working and their tiffins need to be supplied.
* Fast food culture will be fine for some extent of days, later they need home food so they will refer a homemade lunch box, even some mess and bhojnalaya's provide dabba to customers, dabbawallas deliver dabbas from mess and bhojnalayas where customers request to outsource cooking or when they are not interested in cooking.
* Dabbawallas can ask their customers for promotional offers, customers working can promote their products through them. Dabbawallas can provide offers to their customers on promotional materials so that another source of income is generated to dabbawallas.
* Extension problems in other cities can be overcome by another set of dabbawallas who will look after extension areas.

1 the problem of a traffic can be solved by the dabbawala if Each dabba wala prepare the estimated time of travel with traffic so he knows what is the time required for travel and the dabbas can be collected according to it leading to delivery of the dabbas on time with the traffic

2 education and understanding of traffic rules is a problem though dabbawalas are not well educated but they understand the regional languages example Marathi very well so if they are trained in the regional language about the rules and regulation they understand it and it will lead to smooth delivery of the dabbas
3 the problem of not cooking in mumbai there are many caterers providing food services so dabba wala can collect dabba from caterer which a customer has selected and can be delivered to the office

Solutions:

terror attacks:
The organisation need to join hands with the state government and look forward for the security measures of employees of organisation.
That leads to saving the lives of dabbawalas and also main motto reaching out Dabbas to customers will served .

online gateway:
The Dabbawalas can encourage people to register online if they wish to use the dabbawala service. Such a step would increase their customer base.

Fast food culture:
Now a days the instant ways of serving food is seen. But the health of individual is not considered for the sake to fill stomach at the moment people are opting that. The awareness need to be given to people regarding hygienic foods & homemade.

Since dabbawalas are extremely organized, punctual and their services are easily affordable by anybody, their main problems is the Mumbai traffic and the effect of natural calamities( especially rain) on the flow of their delivery schedule.
Here are a few solutions or measures they could take to avoid these problems:

◇ Since dabbawalas are representing their company in different platforms or colleges, they can ask for fundings so that they are able to purchase simple vehicles (to avoid the Mumbai rain) each, for every site to deliver the dabbas safely, without any damage and on time.

◇Also, they can study the routes of metro throughout the city, so that if the traffic and natural calamities is a hurdle in delivery system, they can always opt for a metro.

Nearly two hundred thousand people wait daily for the dabbas from Mumbai dabbawallas.
They have Tie ups to provide variety of foods .
Booking of services can be done through internet and SMS.

Disruptions.
Because the delivery ppl are less educated ,keep it simple and keep it real. Each dabba has a code ,which they understand. Acute visibility. Do not complicate things.

Traffic.
At every station , they meet the other dabbawallas ,with whom they exchange.

Natural calamities.
Mumbai dabbawallas are known for their excellent service, incase of a natural calamities ,the food reaches the office before the person reaches. They keep it simple. Do not depend on technology , they prefer mental note than depending on gadget for time.

They claimed that their aim was to provide healthy cooked food.

Less education of dabbawallas.
They are illiterate and depend on mental role. Instead of depending on technology ,they depend on business on trust , experience and above all knowledge and intelligence if families.

Solutions:
1) Increasing Mumbai Traffic: Mumbai is one of the populated cities in the country and one of the major challenges is delivering through the constantly growing traffic. A new way of looking for the solution could be learning from the supply chain of Swiggy and Zomato. Mumbai dabbawalas could upgrade to using GPS which is readily available on mobile and could alter or know the traffic lag for a particular location and make the necessary changes.

2) Natural Calamities: Mumbai Dabbawalas has faced this situation earlier and the best way to tackle is restricting the radius of service as dabbawalas operate on working days.

3) Less education and avoiding traffic and railway bridge rule: One way of looking at this is to training the dabbawalas and devising a model to compare the performance on regular bases to keep them upgraded about the necessary changes, this way education requirement gets eliminated and all have the same training and skill set.

4) New customer acquisition: Their main acquisition happens on the bases of word of mouth. They can have a tie-up with a home food providing service or become an aggregator to deliver specific diet conscious people, this way they can expand their reach and cater to different customers with the existing model.

5) Fast food culture: The coming generation has adapted to eating fast food, but the question is to what extent? At the end of the day, working-class customers still prefers homemade food and this shall always keep Mumbai Dabawallas running in the long run as well.

6) No promotional offers: They can offer an initial 3 days free trial service.

7) Extension problems in other cities: Mumbai has been chosen because of the easy accessibility through local train, such a network is very crucial for expansion.

8) Outsource cooking request: This can be fixed by having a tie-up with Mess in that particular area.

The solution to less education & avoiding traffic & railways bridge rules could be solved under the 6 month probabtionary training program engaged by them wherein they can educate them regarding the uncertainities that may arise which could be natural or manmade disasters .
Further, the working class prefers eating homecooked food as they cannot eat out for long periods because it’s expensive and bad for health, many people want special foods due to religious beliefs or prefer having food which is of goodquality and not standardized and boring like they get in their office canteens.
Create an Integrated performance chain that is to focus on more of individual pieces to get hung up in the details leading to less efficiency. Secondly to concemtrate on entire system & flow of products & information.

Training should be given to all the employees on railway schedule to avoid the traffic problems.

They can use their own website to track the dabbawala meeting their destination so that it would be helpful to others as well as the customer to know their dabba tracking.

Thay can also hire more employees to provide fast food as well as good food to the customers.
They can also have varieties(size) of dabba to be more customized and also would be helpfull for the customers with different needs.

SOLUTIONS to problems mentioned in case:
1.Increasing mumbai traffic: the traffic cannot be avoided so the experienced people from the group can conduct programs to help handle the traffic efficiently.
2: Natural calamities: the distance covered by each dabbawalla can be minimized so in flood situation it will be helpful for them to do their job
3. Nuclear families : as in nuclear families both people will be working, they can tie up with the mess
4: Fast food culture:they can promote the idea of "eat healthy stay healthy" or can tie up with the other caterers.
5: Customer request to outsource cooking and no interest in cooking : they can tie up with mess near to the client or near to them and make use of it. the mess can be of clients preference as well
6: No promotional offers: the dabbawallas now have social media accounts and can promote it through social media. they can also get leads through their existing clients.
7: Extension problems in other cities: they can hire people from that respective cities. as they are familiar with whereabouts.

In October this year, with the launch of digitaldabbawala.com, they are now expanding their delivery from just lunch boxes to last-mile delivery of digital services. This is a combined initiative with Anulom Technologies, a government approved rental-agreement registration website.
Before launching this service, Anulom handpicked a 15 member team for process and laptop training. Each of these 15 individuals were chosen from different regions in mumbai and thane.

Disruption in their service, though unavoidable due to the threat from the coronavirus, is likely to put thousands in inconvenience.
Rain affects trains on Western line and a section of Harbour line.

Mumbai Dabbawalas has faced this situation earlier and the best way to tackle is restricting the radius of service as dabbawalas operate on working days.

Mumbai Dabbawala is an integral part of Mumbai as life without them is inconceivable. It is actually a delivery system where a dabbawala collects lunch box from a particular place and delivers it to his customer’s workplace and again returns it back on the same day.

They work on a coding system that helps them to avoid any mistakes. It is a unique organisation where a dabba changes hands nearly six times and till there is no error. This service is carried within a specific timeframe of nearly six hours every day, six days every week and for fifty-one weeks every year on a regular basis completing nearly 260,000 transactions including up and down services. Main criteria of becoming a dabbawala are that he must be a native that is a Marathi and must not be highly educated as most of them are illiterate. Mumbai Dabbawala offers 100% customer satisfaction to its clients.

Providing proper instruction and training for the dabbawalas on traffic signals n train rules.
Mumbai dabbawalas should have to set a target on providing tiffins to the customers.
Dabbawalas should have to tie up with other restaurants.
Dabbawalas can use online service like swiggy and zomato.
Supply chain of dabbawalas should have to be developed.
Dabbawalas can use new strategies so they can provide faster food for customers.
As in dabbawalas their so many old age people who are working for them. Dabbawalas should have to take some new staff.
They can train dabbawalas on new technology.
They can come up with their own catering services.
They should have to give proper instructions to the dabbawalas.
As they have already 2 extra employees for each location. But it's not sufficient for them.
As mumbai dabbawalas offer 100% services to the customers. And because of which customers are satisfied by their services.

Dabawalas have recently received six sigma Award as there are efficient in time management and 0.01 errors they dont need any Presence of Technology
Publicity can be done by using Word of mouth Publicity

Many Necluar Families prefer dabbawalas as they want to provide home cooked food to thier family members

Fast food is a small challenge but at the end people prefer home cooked food
Training will educate them about all the traffic and railway rules

Delhi cannot be feasible due to no proper transport facilities
Natural calamities can have a lesser impact on operations by proper training.
And to face the Natural calamities they can come with their own food service so that their customers get food delivered during Natural calamities.

To deal with traffic they can plan their routes accordnacco so where the traffic is usually less and use of Bycycle so they can pass by easily and fast through heavy traffic.

* Mumbai traffic being an unavoidable problem for the this association of dabbawalas is already dealing well with the Mumbai traffic problem they are making appropriate use of the local trains and they are effective team of members to reach there tiffin boxes on time to their customers

*. Natural calamities
As we know Mumbai faces a tough time due to the natural calamities especially in the season of rains to effectively deal with this problem the Mumbai dabbawalas should build an active chain of people who can cover their own areas during the times of floods this will help the dabbawalas to reach the tiffin boxes to the respective areas even in the time of disruption

* Two dabbawalas per group
In order to avoid the delay or skip of delivery of tiffin boxes inn case of any accident or uncertainty, the dabbawalas have built a stronger network amongst themselves where in, in case of such uncertainties the dabbawalas near by to that area will deliver the tiffin box to the customer this will help them avoid the skip of delivery

* Less education
The dabbawalas undergo training wfeee in they are thought how to carry out their job
They are also briefed about the locations so that there is no problem ij navigating.

New customer acquisition
They mainly work on the basis of word of mouth promotion
Hence this is how they aquire jew customers

* No promotional offers
Their main attraction is in their accuracy of work hence they do not need any promotional offers
*

Problems and solution:
1.Increasing mumbai traffic: the traffic cannot be avoided so the experienced people from the group can conduct programs to help handle the traffic efficiently.
2: Natural calamities: the distance covered by each dabbawalla can be minimized so in flood situation it will be helpful for them to do their job
3. Nuclear families : as in nuclear families both people will be working, they can tie up with the mess
4. Less education and avoiding traffic and railway bridge rule: One way of looking at this is to training the dabbawalas and devising a model to compare the performance on regular bases to keep them upgraded about the necessary changes, this way education requirement gets eliminated and all have the same training and skill set.
5. No promotional offers: Here employees having experience of 7-10 years are only considered as managers.
Employees salary depends on how much customers they are able to fetch on their own, in near future this may create problem to dabbawalas because without promotion no employees like to work for long duration
6. customer request to outsource cooking: If both the husband and wife are working then they may nt get sufficient time for cooking so their is a request for dabbawalas to come up with this service also
If they can't cook atleast they can hire someone who coooks for them
They can have a tie up and their business can expand
7. Internet and mobile based backend service: the dabbawalas are not updated. If the start using the technology they may still reach faster ie if any customer is out of station they can inform in advance and save their time

1. Increased Mumbai Traffic - Though the Mumbai traffics are inevitable, dabbawalas could be provided with motorbikes or carrier vehicles on rent basis to reduce operating costs.

2. Natural Calamity- Dabbawalas could use social media to communicate any delays or delivery time variations to their customers or even unavailability of services in situations like natural calamity.

3. Less Education - Dabbawalas could be trained in abiding to traffic rules, making use of social media to promote their services. Training should be also made in maintaining their health as they have to carry heavy lunch boxes and travel long distances in Mumbai’s crowds.

4. Not Interested In Cooking - The organisation can recruit women/men who very well know cooking variety of dishes to increase number of deliveries than the actual numbers. This will rise their income as well.

5. Fast Food Culture - Collaboration could be made with emerging fast food joints which will lead to more delivery numbers and also fast food joints can have greater reach. It’s a win- win strategy.

6. Internet Based Services- Dabbawalas must be trained to use latest technology like online payments.

A collecting dabbawala, usually on bicycle, collects dabbas either from a worker’s home or from the dabba makers. As many of the carriers are of limited literacy, the dabbas (boxes) have some sort of distinguishing mark on them, such as a colour or group of symbols. Lunch boxes are usually marked in several ways: (1) abbreviations for collection points, (2) colour code for starting station, (3) number for destination station and (4) markings for handling dabbawala at destination, building and floor. The dabbawala then takes them to a designated sorting place, where he and other collecting dabbawalas sort the lunch boxes into groups. The grouped boxes are put in the coaches of trains, with markings to identify the destination of the box. The markings include the railway station to unload the boxes and the destination building delivery address. At each station, boxes are handed over to a local dabbawala, who delivers them. The empty boxes are collected after lunch or the next day and sent back to the respective houses. Dabbawallas tend to belong to the Varkari sect of Maharashtra and consider Tukaram’s teachings of helping each other to be central to their efficiency and motivation. The service is almost always uninterrupted, even on the days of severe weather such as monsoons. Since 1890, when the dabbawalas formally came into existence, none of them had ever gone on strike until 2011 when the members decided to head towards Azad Maidan to support Anna Hazare in his campaign against corruption. Each dabbawala, regardless of role, is paid around 8,000 rupees per month (about US$131 in 2014). Between 175,000 and 200,000 lunch boxes are moved each day by 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas, all with an extremely small nominal fee and with utmost punctuality.

. Instead of two dabbawala to group hey can reduce to one , it's time saving.

. They work on coding system which aviods to help mistakes .
